With the rise of the Organic Movement, almost all consumable items have an organic version of them. Organic Beer is just the natural progression of this trend. In the United States, sales of organic beer have increased more than tenfold since 2003, from $9 million to $92 million in 2014.
Primarily, there are 2 types of Organic Certifications for Beer
100% Organic: This certification is the highest level and requires that the beer be brewed entirely from organically produced ingredients and nothing else.
Organic: This level, comprises of maximum number of beers. Organic beers must be brewed from 95 percent organically produced ingredients. The remaining 5 percent of ingredients must not be available in organic form in the quality and quantity needed.
These certifications are issued by the USDA, and they keep changing periodically.
The Organic Ingredients such as the Hops and the Yeast are costlier than the conventional ones and Brewers face a challenge there. These Organic Ingredients are harder to source since these ingredients are hard to cultivate organically. However, Brewers say that the extra cost is worth it. Leaving pesticides, additives, and petroleum-based fertilisers in the past, embracing natural farming techniques that produce a better tasting beer in many people’s eyes.
In order to increase sales, Brewers are trying to target millennials. One commercial that aired on Super Bowl showed the Michelob Ultra Pure Gold Organic beer featuring actress Zoe Kravitz talking about beer in its pure, organic form.
Ireland’s FIRST Organic Beer : 12 Towers
The Munster Brewery, based in Cork produces the Irish Red Ale. It is silky smooth with hints of plum, raisin and a slight roast finish. 12 Towers has been certified organic by IOFGA, the Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association.
