Calling out to all chocolate lovers!

We all have guilty pleasures here in live. I for certainly have a very distinct one – chocolate. If it was up to me, I would eat chocolate to almost every meal, every part of the day. But as life on a student budget dont really lead to the most nutritious and healthy lifestyle, I have to limit myself and save money where I can. That means that ”extra” treats like chocolate has to go out of the way.

But what If i told you that there is a niche in the beer craft market that is made perfectly for people who share the same weakness as me (and many others)? Did you know that CHOCOLATE BEER (yes, you heard me right), exists? And it exists here in Ireland?

Although, as any true chocolate fan, we need to more. Is the taste of plain chocolate, sweet, bitter, roasted?

Well that depends on the beer you choose, but most of the different choices has a vanilla and cacao aroma to it. Depending on the level of aroma you crave for. Most of the chocolate beers are brewed and available mostly in the US, but luckily enough, we have found some you could get a hold of here.

One of the lightest choices of ”Buried at Sea” by Galway Bay. The beer has a light and silky chocolate flavour, although the deep brown color it has. A good beer to start with. Works especially well with desserts or just a simple roast on a Sunday. Where can you get it? In all Galway Bay Brewery bars, and its four to choice from in Dublin.

If you want an explosion of taste in your mouth, you should try Dublin brewery "Hope´s Export Stout NO4". In addition to a dark chocolate kick of flavour, it is also dominated by a aromatic coffee, vanilla and caramel flavour. What more could you ask for?

Works especially well with lamb-dishes, beef and chocolate-tart. This can be a bit difficult to get a hold of, but try your luck at Baggot Street Wines located on Baggot Street Upper in Dublin 4.

Another beer that I definitely will be on the lookout for is ”Beamish” beer from Cork. It saw the first light of day in 1792. Similar to Guinness in texture and looks, this beer is much more aromatic with delicate hints of both chocolate and coffee taste. The beer is actually only available in Ireland (lucky us!!), so ask for it in the next bar your are at!

There are many different chocolate beers to choose from. It´s really the best of two worlds. Photo: Irish Times, 2017

On Friday the 1st of march, we will have a special event with chocolate beer-tasting. Remember to sign up to secure your spot now before it gets full!
